Go big on this Kapohokine Adventures all day tour!
The most memorable way to experience the Big Island’s Kilauea Volcano is at sunset, when the red lava glows against the darkness. Don’t miss this incredible sight when you journey to Hawaii. Let the guides of Kapohokine Adventures show you the secrets of the island in their Evening Volcano Tour.
Each guest is picked up from their hotel, so your small group will gather from all over the island for this Kapohokine Adventures tour. Make sure to dress in layers, as the weather on the summit is variable with misty rainforest conditions. Prepare for light rains, cool winds, and low temperatures, along with bright sunshine. Also be ready to walk over the uneven blackened lava as you explore the cooled lava fields.
Board their van with large viewing windows and comfy seats. As you drive through town, the fertile green backdrop of the rainforest transforms dramatically into the blackened basalt lava fields of Kalapana. Check out the stark Black Sand Beach as you continue to search for active lava to view. On your way to Volcanoes National Park, you’ll also stop by Father Damien’s Painted Church, where the now Saint Damien began his Hawaiian journey.
Once at the national park, you’ll learn all about the volcanoes themselves including their steam vents, craters, and active and blackened lava. The Jaggar Museum takes an in-depth look at the elements that create volcanoes, including different types of lava. There is even seismographic equipment on exhibit there! Ask lots of questions, as these guides are well versed in the geology, history, and cultural references of these fiery giants.
Here you’ll find the overlook of the Halema’uma’u Crater – the best place to catch a glimpse of the red lava glow at sunset.
Next, head over to the Volcano Winery for a delicious dinner and wine tasting. Sample the distinctive wines infused with guava, honey or macadamia nut. Share a meal with new friends and family as the sun sets across the landscape.
After dinner, you’ll head back over to the Halema’uma’u Crater, where the twilight creates a perfect setting for lava viewing. The cool mountain air and light breeze at dusk highlight the warm red glow in the crater. Take lots of pictures, for these memories you’ll cherish. Reserve your seat with Kapohokine Adventures for a chance to view one of Mother Nature’s greatest wonders.
